Preface

Millions of years ago the earth that we live in today did not exist. It was covered in an atmosphere that missed out on oxygen, mainly consisted of water vapour and carbon dioxide, at temperature levels higher than a 100°C. Life as we know it today simply wasn’t possible back then. Over time temperature fell, the water vapour precipitated and the carbon dioxide washed out into the newly formed primeval ocean. This ocean was home to the first anaerobic organisms that eventually developed a process to convert sunlight into chemical energy, producing oxygen as a by-product – the so called photosynthesis.

These single events and the mutual interference of earth’s former atmosphere with its first living beings set ground for an oxygen containing and stable atmosphere that subsequently enabled life as we know it today.

overview

For our societies, energy in its various forms has always been essential in the past and will stay indispensable in the future. Due to the sheer unlimited availability of solar and wind, these two forms of primary energy are seen to be destined to provide ethically valuable and sustainable energy and thereby a lasting long-term benefit and prosperity to societies world-wide.

Continuously decreasing system costs and steadily increasing efficiencies are currently paving the way for solar panels being installed to every family home, residential community building and the commercial building sector.

The imbalance

The primary energy usage of individual household, business or entire economies is generally split up into three different sectors: electricity, heat and transport. The latter mainly based on fossil fuels. While electric heating systems already hold a significant share on the Central European heating market, electric vehicles are seen to take a major share in the field of individual transport on a medium and long-term perspective. Therefore, taking a closer look at the demand side it becomes obvious that these three main sectors of energy will be dominated by electricity. Electricity thus represents a very versatile form of energy that shall be transformed into a specific other form of energy as soon as we need it.

Continuously decreasing system costs and steadily increasing efficiencies are currently paving the way for solar panels being installed to every family home, residential community building and the commercial building sector.
